    Why Certified Portable Fuel Storage Matters in India’s E20 Era

    India’s fuel landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. One of the most visible changes is the country’s move towards E20 petrol—a blend containing up to 20% ethanol and 80% petrol.

    According to information released by the Government of India, ethanol blending in petrol increased from less than 1.5% in 2013–14 to around 20% in 2025–26. The transition forms part of a broader strategy to improve energy security, reduce dependence on imported crude oil and increase the use of domestically produced renewable fuel.

    Much of the public conversation around E20 has understandably focused on vehicles, fuel efficiency and engine compatibility. However, another part of the fuel ecosystem deserves equal attention: how petrol is stored, transferred and handled outside the vehicle itself.

    For businesses, contractors, workshops, agricultural operators and maintenance teams that regularly handle portable quantities of fuel, the quality of the container is not a minor consideration.

    E20 Is Changing the Conversation Around Fuel Handling

    Ethanol-blended petrol is not entirely new to India. The Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme has expanded progressively over the years, culminating in the widespread adoption of E20.

    The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has stated that E20 was introduced following testing and consultation involving organisations such as the Automotive Research Association of India, Indian Institute of Petroleum, automobile manufacturers and oil marketing companies.

    Testing covered areas including durability, corrosion resistance and material compatibility.

    That last point—material compatibility—is particularly relevant when thinking beyond a vehicle’s fuel tank.

    Portable fuel containers, dispensing equipment, hoses, seals and other components that may come into contact with petrol all form part of the fuel-handling chain. Businesses therefore have good reason to pay closer attention to the products being used for fuel storage and transportation.

    Why Ordinary Containers Are Not the Answer

    It can be tempting to view a container simply as something capable of holding liquid. Petrol, however, is not an ordinary liquid.

    Using unsuitable cans, bottles or makeshift containers can introduce several problems. Poor seals may increase the possibility of leakage. Weak construction can make a container vulnerable to damage during transportation. Unsuitable materials can deteriorate after repeated exposure, while poorly designed closures may make fuel transfer unnecessarily difficult.

    There is also the issue of contamination.

    Fuel used in generators, construction equipment, agricultural machinery and vehicles needs to remain as clean as reasonably possible. Dirt, moisture and foreign material entering a poorly stored fuel supply can create avoidable operational problems.

    A properly designed portable fuel container addresses these issues through a combination of material selection, construction, sealing and controlled dispensing.

    Certification Provides Buyers With an Important Reference Point

    For professional buyers, certification can help distinguish purpose-built fuel-storage equipment from generic alternatives.

    In India, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, or PESO, functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and administers regulations relating to petroleum, compressed gases, explosives and other hazardous substances.

    A PESO-approved steel jerry can can therefore be a more appropriate consideration for organisations seeking purpose-built equipment for portable fuel handling rather than relying on improvised storage methods.

    Certification should not be treated simply as a marketing label. For procurement teams, it provides an additional reference when evaluating whether a product has been developed within an established regulatory and testing framework.

    This becomes particularly relevant for petrol pumps, infrastructure companies, logistics operators, industrial facilities and other organisations where fuel handling is part of routine operations.

    Steel Continues to Have a Role in Portable Fuel Storage

    Despite the availability of several container materials, steel remains widely relevant for demanding applications.

    A well-manufactured steel fuel container provides strong mechanical protection and can withstand the knocks and movement commonly associated with industrial transportation and field use. Suitable internal treatment is equally important, particularly when the container will repeatedly come into contact with fuel.

    In each of these situations, storage quality becomes part of broader operational safety and efficiency.

    E20 Makes Good Storage Practices More Relevant, Not Less

    It would be misleading to suggest that the introduction of E20 suddenly makes every existing portable fuel container unsuitable. The Government of India has stated that E20 has undergone extensive technical validation, including testing related to corrosion and material compatibility.

    The more reasonable conclusion is that India’s evolving fuel ecosystem gives businesses another reason to review their entire fuel-handling process.

    Questions worth asking include:

    • Is the container specifically intended for petroleum products?

    • Is its construction suitable for repeated industrial use?

    • Does it close securely?

    • Are its internal surfaces appropriate for the intended fuel?

    • Can fuel be poured in a controlled manner?

    • Is there credible certification or testing behind the product?

    • Is the container inspected regularly for physical damage or deterioration?

    These questions matter regardless of whether petrol contains 10%, 20% or another permitted level of ethanol.

    Procurement Decisions Should Look Beyond the Lowest Price

    One of the easiest mistakes in industrial procurement is comparing products only by their upfront cost.

    A cheaper fuel container may appear attractive until poor sealing, corrosion, difficult dispensing or premature failure begins interfering with operations.

    For businesses purchasing multiple containers, factors such as durability, standardisation, availability of suitable dispensing accessories, ease of handling and certification can provide considerably more value over the product’s usable life.

    Procurement teams should therefore assess fuel containers in the same way they would assess other safety-relevant industrial equipment: based on fitness for purpose rather than price alone.

    Building a More Professional Fuel-Handling Culture

    India’s transition towards higher ethanol blending represents more than a change at the petrol pump. It is part of a wider shift towards a more modern and carefully regulated fuel ecosystem.

    As fuels evolve, the equipment surrounding their storage and handling should receive appropriate attention as well.

    For businesses dealing with portable petrol supplies, choosing certified, purpose-built containers is a straightforward way to strengthen fuel-handling practices. It can support cleaner storage, more controlled transportation and a more professional approach to refuelling equipment in the field.

    E20 may be the development bringing fuel compatibility into today’s conversation, but the underlying principle is much broader: the fuel is only as well managed as the system used to store, move and dispense it.

    For industrial users, fleet operators, contractors and other professional buyers, certified portable fuel storage should therefore be viewed not as an optional accessory, but as an important part of responsible fuel management.
